For a city that houses some of the world’s biggest tech companies, it seems fitting that San Francisco is also one of the best cities in the world to fly a drone.
In fact, the city is so drone-friendly that I’ve been able to fly my DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone for the past six months without worry of being arrested, even though there is no drone registration or permitting required. While there are certain restrictions on where you can fly a drone in San Francisco, there are still plenty of safe locations to fly your drone in the city. I’ll show you my favorite five spots.
Best places to fly a drone in San Francisco
Embarcadero & The Bay The San Francisco Bay is one of my favorite places to fly a drone. For an aerial view of the city, I recommend flying a drone from Pier 33 on the Embarcadero. From here, you’ll be able to fly your drone out over the harbor and towards the Bay Bridge and beyond. For a closer look at the Golden Gate Bridge, fly your drone from Crissy Field, a sandy beach located on the San Francisco Bay’s northern shore.
Flying, a drone over the Golden Gate Bridge, is one of the most popular drone photography spots in the entire United States. The bridge is one of the most photographed structures globally, and it’s no wonder why: the Golden Gate Bridge is simply stunning from an aerial perspective.
Alamo Square Park:
For a totally unique San Francisco view, I recommend flying a drone from Alamo Square Park. For those unfamiliar with the city, Alamo Square Park sits atop a hill that overlooks the entire city.
From Twin Peaks, you can get a 360-degree view of the city. The high point in the middle of the city is a popular place for drone pilots to fly their drones.
Coit Tower sits atop Telegraph Hill, a popular location for drone pilots to fly their drones. The tower offers a 360-degree view of the city. Although it’s not as popular as some other drone photography spots in San Francisco, it is still a nice place to fly a drone.
